Get your stihl power tools out and brush the dust off, it’s time for some DIY. DIY is one the best thing you can do, it leaves you with a sense of achievement and in this case an entertainment centre. The following goes through how you can make your very own entertainment unit.
Before you can get going you need a design. You’re building your own cabinet so you can design something that fits the space you are working with well. This does not just involve taking a pretty picture, you need to take measurements. You can adapt another design to your own measurements or start from scratch if you are feeling creative.
You’ll need to cut the plywood to the depth of the cabinet. Use a circular saw, cut the panels to the required length, including the side panels, centre vertical panels, top, and centre and bottom panels. You will also need to cut the shelves.
You can’t predict the future and you cannot predict how much space you will need. Make the shelves adjustable by creating holes. To do this, clamp a piece of pegboard to the inside and each panel housing the adjustable shelves. Drill through the pegboard you will insure the selves will have perfectly spaced holes.
Attach the shelves and the base. Start assembling it by adding glue the end of shelf. Align the panels and then screw together. How this is done will depend on your design.
Apply a stain to the entertainment centre. Use a soft rag and rub it into the wood, following the direction of the grain.
You do not have to have a back panel. You may find it frustrating to only have certain areas where cords are able to be thread through. If you do attach a back panel make sure that you stain the plywood too.
Make and attach the sliding tracks. You use a piece of plywood and cut a groove into the edge using a table saw. The depth of the groove in the top slide rack should be 1/2″ and 3/4″ in the bottom track. Attach the sliding tracks to the back, top and bottom of the upper unit using deck screws. This is followed by inserting the back panel into the top groove first and then into the bottom. Finally, it’s up to you if you want to add moulding. Do you want something basic or something with a bit more elegance? That’s the best part about DIY, you are making it so other than the limitation of building skills there is nothing stopping you. Once you have the taste of DIY you’ll find yourself addicted.
